In Togo, communities in the Plateaux and Central regions are exposed to various health risks and natural hazards. We help them to analyse these risks and to plan and implement measures to increase their resilience. Key areas of intervention include the promotion of health-promoting practices and access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities - as well as building community capacity and mechanisms for disaster prevention and preparedness, such as local emergency committees. The aim of the project is to improve the health of people living in the Central and Plateaux regions of Togo, and their resilience in the face of a range of risks - through health-promoting practices, improved access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation, and better ways of identifying and dealing with hazards and threats. The health of Togo's poor is particularly at risk. Difficult access to water, hygiene and sanitation, as well as to health measures such as routine vaccinations, are major factors in this. Too little is known about the importance of health-promoting practices such as breastfeeding, pregnancy monitoring and basic hygiene. In Togo, 64 out of every 1,000 children still do not reach their 5th birthday, and 396 women out of every 100,000 die from complications during pregnancy or childbirth. In Western Europe, the infant and child mortality rate is less than 4 deaths per 1,000 live births, and the maternal mortality rate is 5 deaths per 100,000 births. These scourges are compounded by the risk of natural disasters such as floods and landslides, which are detrimental to people's health and livelihoods. Without sufficient awareness of the risks and the means to deal with them, communities are unable to deal with them adequately. To reduce their vulnerability, they need to increase their resilience, i.e. develop resources and capacities in all the areas that are important to a community - from health and social cohesion to the management of natural resources.
