Pedro Sandoval : Velazquez's Dream [In Process]
To celebrate the Spanish Master, Diego Velazquez (1599 -1660) at the 2019 Florence Biennale. [Pedro Sandoval showed great sense of humour by depicting the historical court painter in his studio painting “Las Meninas” as he would have done in 1656. Pedro revisits the extravagant dresses of his models by appropriation of some of the major masters of the 20th Century like Piet Mondrian the Dutch painter who inspired many fashion designers with his minimalist geometry. Mondrian is a founding father of historical abstractionism.] Velazquez's dream was born from the experience of transferring the masterpiece of Las Meninas to the level of pure comics. A deconstruction of the forms that connects with the idea of how each of the great masters of modern painting would have treated the cast of characters. From Magritte to Soto, passing through Mondrian. The result is a "collage" where the great artists shake hands with the "comic" concept that represents Velázquez himself. The author's signature is printed on the work, through his characteristic beach ball, which will mark Sandoval's work.
